Robusta vs Arabica: Health Benefits, Caffeine, and Antioxidants

The Health Case for Coffee

Decades of research have established coffee as one of the most antioxidant-rich foods in the Western diet. Regular coffee consumption is associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, and certain cancers. But not all coffee is equal — and the Robusta vs. Arabica distinction matters more than most people realize.

Caffeine: Robusta Wins

Robusta contains approximately 2.2–2.7% caffeine by dry weight, compared to 1.2–1.5% for Arabica. This means a standard phin brew with Robusta delivers significantly more caffeine than an equivalent pour over with Arabica. For those who drink coffee primarily for the energy boost, Robusta is the more efficient choice.

Antioxidants: Robusta Also Wins

Robusta contains higher levels of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) — the primary antioxidant compounds in coffee. CGAs are associated with anti-inflammatory effects, improved insulin sensitivity, and reduced oxidative stress. Robusta's CGA content is typically 7–10% of dry weight, compared to 5.5–8% for Arabica.

Lipids and Cholesterol

Both Robusta and Arabica contain diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol) — compounds that can raise LDL cholesterol when consumed in large quantities. These are found in coffee oils, which are present in unfiltered brewing methods (phin, French press) but largely removed by paper filters (pour over, drip). If cholesterol is a concern, paper-filtered coffee is preferable regardless of bean type.

Summary Table

Health FactorRobustaArabica
CaffeineHigher (2.2–2.7%)Lower (1.2–1.5%)
Chlorogenic acidsHigher (7–10%)Lower (5.5–8%)
Diterpenes (LDL risk)LowerHigher
TrigonellineLowerHigher

The Bottom Line

From a purely nutritional standpoint, Robusta has more caffeine and more antioxidants than Arabica. The diterpene difference slightly favors Robusta for cholesterol, but this is largely neutralized by paper filtration in either case. For Vietnamese coffee drinkers who use a phin, the health profile of Robusta is comparable to or better than Arabica in most metrics.
