Vietnamese Coffee Caffeine Guide

Caffeine in Vietnamese Coffee

Vietnamese phin coffee is one of the highest-caffeine coffee drinks you can make. Here's exactly how much caffeine is in each drink, why robusta is stronger, and what it means for you.

Why Vietnamese Coffee Has More Caffeine

Vietnamese coffee is significantly higher in caffeine than most Western coffee drinks — and the reason is the beans. Vietnamese coffee uses robusta (Coffea canephora), which contains approximately 2.7% caffeine by dry weight, compared to 1.5% for arabica. This means robusta has roughly double the caffeine of arabica.

The phin brewing method also contributes to the caffeine content. The slow drip extraction (4–5 minutes) and concentrated brew ratio produce a coffee that's stronger than most drip coffee methods.

A standard phin-brewed Vietnamese coffee (80–100ml) contains approximately 150–200mg of caffeine — roughly equivalent to a double espresso, but in a larger volume.

Caffeine Content: Vietnamese Coffee vs Other Drinks

Here is how Vietnamese coffee compares to other common caffeinated drinks:

Vietnamese phin coffee (100ml): 150–200mg caffeine. This is the standard single phin serving.

Double espresso (60ml): 120–140mg caffeine. Comparable total caffeine to a phin, but in a much smaller volume — higher caffeine concentration per ml.

Arabica drip coffee (240ml): 80–120mg caffeine. A full mug of arabica drip has less caffeine than a single phin shot.

Starbucks Pike Place (240ml): ~235mg caffeine. Starbucks uses a higher coffee-to-water ratio than home drip, making it comparable to Vietnamese coffee.

Red Bull (250ml): 80mg caffeine. A phin shot has 2–2.5x the caffeine of a Red Bull.

Black tea (240ml): 40–70mg caffeine. Vietnamese coffee has 3–5x the caffeine of black tea.

Ca Phe Sua Da (full drink with ice): The condensed milk and ice dilute the caffeine concentration, but the total caffeine remains 150–200mg from the phin shot.

Caffeine by Vietnamese Coffee Drink

Ca Phe Den (Black)

150–200mg per 100ml phin shot. The strongest Vietnamese coffee — no dilution from milk or ice.

Ca Phe Sua Da (Iced)

150–200mg total. The phin shot is the same strength; ice and condensed milk dilute the concentration but not the total caffeine.

Bac Xiu (White Coffee)

50–80mg total. Uses a much smaller phin shot (15–20ml) mixed with a large amount of condensed milk and water. Significantly lower caffeine.

Egg Coffee

150–200mg total. Same phin base as Ca Phe Den; the egg cream topping doesn't affect caffeine content.

Caffeine Safety and Guidelines

Health Canada recommends a maximum of 400mg of caffeine per day for healthy adults. This is equivalent to approximately 2 standard phin-brewed Vietnamese coffees.

Special populations: Pregnant women — 300mg/day maximum (approximately 1.5 phin coffees). Children and adolescents — Health Canada recommends limiting caffeine to 2.5mg/kg body weight per day. People with heart conditions, anxiety disorders, or high blood pressure — consult your healthcare provider.

Caffeine sensitivity varies significantly between individuals. Factors that affect caffeine metabolism include genetics (CYP1A2 enzyme variants), body weight, medications, and habitual caffeine intake. Some people can drink 3–4 phin coffees per day with no adverse effects; others experience anxiety or insomnia from a single serving.

If you're new to Vietnamese coffee, start with a smaller serving (50ml phin shot) or dilute with more milk and water. Your tolerance will build over time if you choose to drink it regularly.
