Cà Phê Sữa Đá: The Ultimate Vietnamese Iced Coffee Guide

What Is Cà Phê Sữa Đá?

Cà phê sữa đá (pronounced "ca feh sua da") translates literally to "coffee milk ice" — and that's exactly what it is. Strong phin-brewed coffee poured over sweetened condensed milk and ice. It's Vietnam's most popular coffee drink, sold at every street stall, cafe, and restaurant in the country, and increasingly at Vietnamese cafes worldwide.

The Perfect Ratio

The classic ratio is: 1–2 tablespoons condensed milk : 60–80ml strong phin coffee : generous ice. But ratios are personal — some prefer it sweeter, some stronger. Start with 1.5 tablespoons of condensed milk and adjust from there.

Step-by-Step Recipe

What You Need

  • Vietnamese phin filter
  • 14–16g medium-coarse ground Vietnamese coffee
  • Hot water (93–96°C)
  • 1.5 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
  • Tall glass full of ice

Instructions

  1. Add condensed milk to the bottom of a tall glass.
  2. Brew your phin directly into a small cup (not the iced glass — you want concentrated coffee, not diluted brew).
  3. Let the phin drip for 4–5 minutes.
  4. Pour the hot coffee over the condensed milk and stir briefly to combine.
  5. Pour the coffee-milk mixture over the ice-filled glass.
  6. Stir, taste, and adjust sweetness if needed.

Why It Tastes Better Than Regular Iced Coffee

Most iced coffee is just hot-brewed coffee poured over ice — which dilutes it and makes it watery. Phin coffee is brewed concentrated, so even after dilution from the ice, it retains its bold flavor. The condensed milk adds sweetness and creaminess without thinning the body the way regular milk does. The combination is specifically engineered (by generations of Vietnamese coffee culture) to be perfect over ice.
