Why Rupert Street is the Perfect Spot for Authentic Vietnamese Coffee

East Vancouver has long been a hub for diverse, vibrant food and drink culture. Rupert Street, with its bustling energy and community feel, is the ideal home for our second Hanoi Drip location. We wanted to create a space where locals could experience the slow, deliberate art of phin brewing without having to travel downtown or out to Richmond.

Our Rupert Street café is designed to be your daily stop. Whether you're grabbing a quick Cà Phê Sữa Đá before hopping on the SkyTrain or sitting down to work with a hot Cà Phê Đen (black coffee), the atmosphere here is warm, welcoming, and deeply rooted in Vietnamese coffee traditions.

What to Order at Hanoi Drip Rupert Street

If you're new to Vietnamese coffee, or just looking to try something different, here are a few favorites you must try at our East Van location:

  • Cà Phê Sữa Đá: The undisputed king of Vietnamese coffee. We brew strong, dark Robusta coffee through a traditional metal phin filter, letting it drip slowly over sweet condensed milk. Stir it up, pour it over ice, and you have a rich, sweet, and incredibly strong iced coffee.
  • Cà Phê Trứng (Egg Coffee): A Hanoi specialty! We whip egg yolks with condensed milk until it forms a thick, meringue-like foam, which is then spooned over hot black coffee. It's like drinking a liquid tiramisu.
  • Cà Phê Muối (Salted Coffee): A trendy favorite that balances the bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the milk with a savory layer of salted cold foam. It's a flavor explosion that you have to taste to believe.

The Phin Filter Experience

What makes Vietnamese coffee so special? It all comes down to the beans and the brew method. We use Robusta beans, which are bolder, nuttier, and pack nearly twice the caffeine of the Arabica beans used in most Western coffee shops. These beans are perfectly suited for the phin filter.

The phin is a small metal cup that sits on top of your glass. Hot water is poured over the grounds, and the coffee slowly drips down over the course of 4 to 6 minutes. This slow extraction process creates a concentrated, intensely flavorful brew that stands up perfectly to ice and condensed milk. When you order a hot phin coffee at Rupert Street, we serve it to you right at the table so you can watch the magic happen.

Pairing Your Coffee: Snacks and Pastries

No coffee break is complete without a little something to eat. At our Rupert Street location, we offer a selection of pastries and snacks that pair beautifully with the strong flavors of our coffee. From buttery croissants that you can dip into your Cà Phê Sữa Đá, to savory options for a quick lunch, we have you covered.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What makes Vietnamese coffee different from regular iced coffee?

Vietnamese coffee is typically brewed using Robusta beans and a traditional metal phin filter. This creates a much stronger, bolder, and more caffeinated brew than standard drip coffee. It is traditionally sweetened with condensed milk rather than regular milk and sugar.

Do you serve anything other than coffee at the Rupert Street location?

Yes! In addition to our signature Vietnamese coffees, we offer a variety of teas, refreshing fruit drinks, and a selection of pastries and snacks.

Is there seating available at Hanoi Drip on Rupert Street?

Absolutely. We have comfortable indoor seating perfect for catching up with friends, reading a book, or getting some work done on your laptop.

Can I buy your coffee beans to brew at home?

Yes, we sell our signature house blends of Vietnamese coffee beans, as well as the traditional phin filters, so you can recreate the Hanoi Drip experience in your own kitchen.

Are you open on weekends?

Yes, our Rupert Street location is open Monday through Sunday from 8:30am to 7:00pm.
